Cattail Hats
Details
Learn to weave a basket for your head, using soft cattail leaves gathered in the high desert. You can weave a broad sunhat, or smaller hat for everyday wear. We will use an old-fashioned clothes wringer to flatten the leaves, and learn a variety of basket weaving techniques as we shape the hats. Students who finish early may go on to weave additional baskets. This is a great class for a beginning or
advanced weaver.

Kudzu Backpacks
Details
Weave a pack basket with kudzu vines! We will walk through the entire process from selecting and harvesting material in a kudzu patch, processing the vines, and weaving a useful and beautiful basket! You will learn basic basketry techniques, as well as more advanced weaves to add flair to your basket.

Kudzu vines will be harvested and prepared for you ahead of time,
and naturally-tanned leather straps will be provided.

Bark Satchels
Details
This weekend is all about bark! We will harvest a tuliptree and walk through the process of removing the outer bark to peel the long, silky inner bark fibers for weaving. We will also demonstrate slipping bark from the mimosa and other shrubs. Students may either weave a satchel, or a small twill backpack.
